It would be helpful to have some guidance from iRex or ARINC covering the file and menu format for the internal memory of the Iliad. I have experimented with flight plans, weather briefs, and checklists in .pdf format that work pretty well in the display mode if the font is large enough when the .pdf is created. However, when loading files to the unit using the USB cord, the file management procedures are not intuitive. Some files show up with the .pdf extension, and some do not. An extra file is apparently created by the unit which stores "last page" viewed, but again, there is no guidance on this. The eREX web site information for creating documents helps a bit. Perhaps others on the forum can share their experiences with this. It's a great additional use of the eFlybook even if the data can't be stored to the SD card.

The first time you open a PDF on the iLiad, it creates a sub-folder to hold the PDF and informational files. One of those files is called a manifest file. The manifest file contains a link to the ICON to use and last page read. There are other, non-advertised features of the manifest file that people are discovering and, I'm sure, will eventually be published.

The top menu "Reference" link is just a shortcut to the internal memory/Documents/Reference folder. Putting checklists etc in that folder gives you quick access. However, I rarely use that. I just push the Documents button. I'm keeping the Documents folder pretty clean. Just the eFLYBook application link and the Reference folder. That way, two pushes of the Documents button and I'm into the eFLYBook application.

However, you certainly could copy documents to the SD card and access them from the top menu/SD card link.

Formatting personal documents is pretty simple. With the PDF Creator virtual printer, you can print just about anything and size it for the iLiad display. You can either size the font up and print to an A4 size so that when the iLiad scales it down it is still readable or use normal sized fonts and print to a size for the iLiad. I do that latter.
